Happy birthday to us!

On this day, 15th February, in 2013 we recruited our very first participant at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia. The little fellow was yet to be born, but was eligible because his dad was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Aiming for 1400 pregnancies and babies at the time, we went on to recruit 1511 participants by the end of 2019. We have since been following up 1473 children with a study visit now conducted every 6 months to collect information from questionnaires and samples, like blood and poop.

Our eldest participating child turned 10 at the end of 2022 and our youngest is nearly 3 years old! Thanks to all the families and children who have continued to see that value in this research into the causes of type 1 diabetes. If we know what triggers this condition, we can look at ways of preventing it in future generations.
